 Expanded Help for System Restore:

1NB: The installation of the Russian language plugin seems to cause a problem which prevents reinstallation of the English Starters Pack. In my (Win XP) installation, I used System Restore to recover from this.
To use System Restore to maximum advantage, first create a Restore Point using System Restore in Windows (Windows ME and XP).

In order to use System Restore in Windows, go to Start/ All Programs/ Accessories/ System Tools/ System Restore. If you have not created any Restore Points, all is not lost. A Restore point may exist which has been created by the operating system automatically.

When you choose to Restore your system to a previous point, you will lose any installations which were done after that point. The advantage of System Restore is that many problems may be corrected which would have been next to impossible to fix without reinstallation of Windows. Just be forewarned that it doesn't always work. (Reinstalling Windows is a last resort, though.)

The System Restore interface is self-explanatory, but take your time when using it, and label restore points carefully so as to facilitate future restorations.

The functioning of System Restore allows the correction of Registry problems as well as a whole host of problems and irritations.

It is imperative to make frequent Restore Points in order to benefit fully from this tool. For example, I find it works best if I create two System Restore points each time I reboot , as well as before any installation; that is, anytime I have doubts about the time of the last Restore Point.

More information about System Restore may be obtained from the Microsoft Website.
Aside: Another thing which assists in facilitating recovery from problems in Windows is to use the Control Panel/ Add/Remove Programs functions to do all installations. This enables the removal of the same programs using Control Panel, which is the preferred way to do it, as prior knowledge of the installation is resident in Windows.
