Installing the UMAX 1220S
A 36-bit flatbed scanner in Windows 3.1
Total time for the installation: 5 hours, including some printing and testing
Featured Publication A flatbed scanner is a space-consuming but seemingly useful tool, and equipped with an SCSI-2 interface (note the 'S' in 1220S) allows for quick data transfer even to our Fujitsu laptop computer.   We did encounter numerous problems during the installation, perhaps not all that surprising considering the scanner 'required' Windows 95 or NT according to the packaging.   Since our CD-ROM is down we haven't been able to load any software that came with the UMAX, but some of the software is labelled for Windows 3.1.   So how did we know the scanner would work in Win3.1?   We didn't, but we had a strong inkling from the UMAX website which allowed searching for drivers for Win3.1 and which recommended the same driver exactly for Windows 3.1 as for Windows 95.
