Joshua 1
1It actually came to pass that in later days Moses the slave of Jehovah died, and Jehovah spoke by means of Moses' minister Joshua the son of Nun (the name `Joshua' = `Jehovah-saved'), saying:

2``My servant Moses is dead. Thus, this time is the right time for you. Go across from this side of the Jordan River, you and all the congregation, to solid ground on the other side, the land that I am giving to the sons of Israel (`Israel' = `He will rule as God').

3Wherever you walk in the country, and where the sole of your foot comes to rest, it is given to you, as I said to Moses:

4From the southern pastureland, from Lebanon (`Lebanon' = `white mountain') as far as that mighty River, the Euphrates River (`Euphrates' = `break' forth), all that land of the Hittites, the territory which extends to as far as the Great Sea (Mediterranean Sea) towards the setting of the sun.

5No man will be able to stand against you to your face all the days of your life. What was with Moses is also with you, not leaving you, and not ever forsaking you.

6Be of good courage! Be strong! Then you may make sure to cause my people to divide the land that I gave to their forefathers by my oath.

7Also be of good courage and strong so as to vehemently observe and carry out all of the Law given Moses my servant. Do not turn to your right hand nor to your left away from it, in order that you be successful in all places where you go.

8This very letter of the law must not depart from your mouth. But mutter it night and day with intent to observe and carry out all of the scriptures, since then you will make your way successful and behave wisely.
(``This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein; for then thou shalt make thy ways prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.'' Jewish Publication Society)

9Have you not been commanded? Be courageous, be strong, and don't be frightened nor dismayed, as Jehovah your God is with you everywhere you go.''

10Now Joshua commanded officers of the flock saying:

11``Come into the encampment and command the people. Tell them to get food ready, because: In three days time you are crossing over the Jordan in order to go occupy the land that Jehovah your God is giving you, in order that you may occupy it.''

12To the Reubenites, Gadites, and half-tribe of Manasseh Joshua spoke telling them:

13``Remember the words which Moses Jehovah's servant himself commanded you telling you: Jehovah your God has given you this land as a place of rest.

14``Your wives, your little ones, as well as your livestock will remain in the land which Moses gave you on this side of the Jordan, but all of your powerful men do have to cross over before the face of your brothers to help them, staunch ones,

15until Jehovah rests, that your brothers do occupy the land that Jehovah your God has given them, so as to return to the land of your possession, the possession of yours which Moses the servant of Jehovah gave to you on the other side of the Jordan.''

16Then they answered Joshua by saying: ``All those places where we have been sent we are going, and all of what you are commanding us we will do.

17``All of what we heard from Moses is just, and we will listen to you, only because Jehovah your God is with you as he was with Moses.

18``Any man who disregards your words in not obeying your commands to the full extent of your commanding of him will die. Only be courageous and strong.''

Joshua 1 1
Now it came to pass after the death of Moses the servant of Jehovah, that Jehovah spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses` minister, saying,
Joshua 1 2
Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.
Joshua 1 3
Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, to you have I given it, as I spake unto Moses.
Joshua 1 4
From the wilderness, and this Lebanon, even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your border.
Joshua 1 5
There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life. as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee; I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.
Joshua 1 6
Be strong and of good courage; for thou shalt cause this people to inherit the land which I sware unto their fathers to give them.
Joshua 1 7
Only be strong and very courageous, to observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest have good success whithersoever thou goest.
Joshua 1 8
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate thereon day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
Joshua 1 9
Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of good courage; be not affrighted, neither be thou dismayed: for Jehovah thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
Joshua 1 10
Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying,
Joshua 1 11
Pass through the midst of the camp, and command the people, saying, Prepare you victuals; for within three days ye are to pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which Jehovah your God giveth you to possess it.
Joshua 1 12
And to the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, spake Joshua, saying,
Joshua 1 13
Remember the word which Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded you, saying, Jehovah your God giveth you rest, and will give you this land.
Joshua 1 14
Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle, shall abide in the land which Moses gave you beyond the Jordan; but ye shall pass over before your brethren armed, all the mighty men of valor, and shall help them;
Joshua 1 15
until Jehovah have given your brethren rest, as [he hath given] you, and they also have possessed the land which Jehovah your God giveth them: then ye shall return unto the land of your possession, and possess it, which Moses the servant of Jehovah gave you beyond the Jordan toward the sunrising.
Joshua 1 16
And they answered Joshua, saying, All that thou hast commanded us we will do, and whithersoever thou sendest us we will go.
Joshua 1 17
According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken unto thee: only Jehovah thy God be with thee, as he was with Moses.
Joshua 1 18
Whosoever he be that shall rebel against thy commandment, and shall not hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him, he shall be put to death: only be strong and of good courage.
