Web Plug-ins:
Use It Or Lose It
Featured Publication Are you aware of the many different add-on programs you can get to enhance your browsing experience?   Called `plug-ins', these accessories give additional functionality to web browsers like Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator.   Whether you prefer to stick to the bare-bones browser or install every gadget under the sun is up to you.   But there is a fundamental law that applies to things with which we are entrusted: if you don't use it, you will lose it (Matthew 25:14-30).
Some examples of functions enabled by browser plug-ins include streaming video (and audio), file decompression, web animation, and document viewing.   As time has shown, many of the best plug-ins will become part of the browser in the next generation, so there will be no need to do anything if you are willing to wait.   But often if you have a need for a particular technology right away you will need to download and install browser enhancements, which many times are free of charge and are being continually updated.
Windows Media Player and RealPlayer G2 are competing versions of streaming video player technology available for download in this way.   Macromedia also provides free downloads in the form of animation plug-ins.   Adobe Acrobat is a document viewer that allows viewing of files in the portable document format.   WinZip is used to unzip (decompress) files, but that will cost you something.   If you want to know more, you need to do your own research, but there is certainly a plethora of plug-ins available for all kinds of tasks.
