Isaiah 49 1
Hear me, islands of nations. Prick up your ears, you people, from far away. Before I was conceived Jehovah appointed me. Before even my mother felt any sympathy for me he signified my uniqueness.

Isaiah 49 1
Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye peoples, from far: Jehovah hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name:

Isaiah 49 2
He appointed my mouth a sharpened sword. In the shelter of his hand he kept me safe, and he treasured me like a perfect arrow. He kept me carefully concealed as though in his quiver.

Isaiah 49 2
and he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me: and he hath made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he kept me close:

Isaiah 49 3
He said to me, ``I will send you, Israel, to show the way by which I will be glorified.''

Isaiah 49 3
and he said unto me, Thou art my servant; Israel, in whom I will be glorified.

Isaiah 49 4
Later on I said, ``I have worked hard in vain, I have exhausted myself for nothing and in vain. Certainly Jehovah holds back justice from me, my God withholds my wages.''

Isaiah 49 4
But I said, I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nought and vanity; yet surely the justice [due] to me is with Jehovah, and my recompense with my God.

Isaiah 49 5
Now, says Jehovah, the one who shaped me from the womb to be his envoy to bring Jacob back to him, to gather Israel, I am still honoured in the eyes of Jehovah, and my God is my power.

Isaiah 49 5
And now saith Jehovah that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, and that Israel be gathered unto him (for I am honorable in the eyes of Jehovah, and my God is become my strength);

Isaiah 49 6
Yes, he is saying, ``It is not for nothing that you have been my representative in strengthening the tribes of Jacob and in bringing home again those of Israel who are held in captivity. Now I have also given you as a luminary for the nations, to represent my saving grace to the most distant part of the earth.''

Isaiah 49 6
yea, he saith, It is too light a thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.

Isaiah 49 7
So says Jehovah, the reclaimer of Israel, his holy one, to the one looked down upon, to the one hated by the nations, to the slave of ruling authorities: ``Kings shall see and rise up, powerful men will worship because of Jehovah, who is faithful, even because of the holy one of Israel, who chose you.''

Isaiah 49 7
Thus saith Jehovah, the Redeemer of Israel, [and] his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers: Kings shall see and arise; princes, and they shall worship; because of Jehovah that is faithful, [even] the Holy One of Israel, who hath chosen thee.

Isaiah 49 8
So says Jehovah: ``When I delighted to I announced you, and in a season of troubles I sustained you. I will protect you and give you for a guarantee to the people, that the land be restored to its former glory, that my people be allowed to repossess the desolated land of their inheritance,

Isaiah 49 8
Thus saith Jehovah, In an acceptable time have I answered thee, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee; and I will preserve thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, to raise up the land, to make them inherit the desolate heritages:

Isaiah 49 9
``that as prisoners they be told, `Come out', and as those in darkness, `Reveal yourselves'. They will find food by the wayside, and in the desolate hills they will find pasture.

Isaiah 49 9
saying to them that are bound, Go forth; to them that are in darkness, Show yourselves. They shall feed in the ways, and on all bare heights shall be their pasture.

Isaiah 49 10
``They will not hunger, nor thirst, neither shall the sun nor heat do them harm, because he who has love for them will lead them, and he will guide them to fountains of life-giving water.

Isaiah 49 10
They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun smite them: for he that hath mercy on them will lead them, even by springs of water will he guide them.

Isaiah 49 11
``I will make all my mountains into roads, my ways shall be put on high.

Isaiah 49 11
And I will make all my mountains a way, and my highways shall be exalted.

Isaiah 49 12
``Look! Some will come from far away, and look! some from the north and west, and some from the land of Sinim, the far east.

Isaiah 49 12
Lo, these shall come from far; and, lo, these from the north and from the west; and these from the land of Sinim.

Isaiah 49 13
``Sing, you heavens, and be joyful, you earth. Break out into song, you mountains, because Jehovah has comforted his people, and he is compassionate toward his suffering ones.''

Isaiah 49 13
Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for Jehovah hath comforted his people, and will have compassion upon his afflicted.

Isaiah 49 14
The city of Zion had been saying, ``Jehovah has abandoned me,'' and, ``My Lord has forgotten me.''

Isaiah 49 14
But Zion said, Jehovah hath forsaken me, and the Lord hath forgotten me.

Isaiah 49 15
``Can a woman forget her nursing infant, that she might show no compassion for the child of her own womb? Yes, she indeed may forget, but I will not forget you.

Isaiah 49 15
Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, these may forget, yet will not I forget thee.

Isaiah 49 16
``See, I have carved you into eternity. Your walls stretch out continuously before me.

Isaiah 49 16
Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.

Isaiah 49 17
``Your children will be arriving soon, and those demolishing you and laying waste to you will go out from your midst.

Isaiah 49 17
Thy children make haste; thy destroyers and they that made thee waste shall go forth from thee.

Isaiah 49 18
``Lift up your eyes and look around you, all of them are gathering themselves to come to you now. As sure as I'm alive, says Jehovah, you will really clothe yourself with all of them as though they are an ornament, you will enwrap yourself with them as a bride does.

Isaiah 49 18
Lift up thine eyes round about, and behold: all these gather themselves together, and come to thee. As I live, saith Jehovah, thou shalt surely clothe thee with them all as with an ornament, and gird thyself with them, like a bride.

Isaiah 49 19
``But as for your abandoned and desolate places, and your land which has been destroyed, really now you will have too little space for its inhabitants, whereas the ones who devoured you will be far away.

Isaiah 49 19
For, as for thy waste and thy desolate places, and thy land that hath been destroyed, surely now shalt thou be too strait for the inhabitants, and they that swallowed thee up shall be far away.

Isaiah 49 20
``The children who you thought you had lost shall say to you yet, `This is too little space. Give me enough room to live.'

Isaiah 49 20
The children of thy bereavement shall yet say in thine ears, The place is too strait for me; give place to me that I may dwell.

Isaiah 49 21
``Then you will say in your heart, `Who has fathered these for me, seeing that I am bereft of children, and I am all alone, an exile, wandering around? Who has brought them up? Seeing as I was by myself, where were they then?'

Isaiah 49 21
Then shalt thou say in thy heart, Who hath begotten me these, seeing I have been bereaved of my children, and am solitary, an exile, and wandering to and fro? and who hath brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these, where were they?

Isaiah 49 22
``So says the Lord, Jehovah: `See, I will lift up my hand to the nations, and raise my signal to the peoples, and they will come carrying your sons in their arms, and your daughters will be carried upon their shoulders.

Isaiah 49 22
Thus saith the Lord Jehovah, Behold, I will lift up my hand to the nations, and set up my ensign to the peoples; and they shall bring thy sons in their bosom, and thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders.

Isaiah 49 23
`` `Kings will be your nursing fathers, and their queens your nursing mothers. They will bow down to you with their faces to the earth, and lick the dust of your feet. You will know that I am Jehovah, and that those who hope in me will not be ashamed.' ''

Isaiah 49 23
And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers: they shall bow down to thee with their faces to the earth, and lick the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am Jehovah; and they that wait for me shall not be put to shame.

Isaiah 49 24
``Will prey be taken from a mighty man, or a man lawfully captured be released?

Isaiah 49 24
Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captives be delivered?

Isaiah 49 25
``But so says Jehovah, `Even the captives of the mighty man will be taken away from him, and the prey of the violent one shall be rescued. I will contend with your adversary, and I will save your children.

Isaiah 49 25
But thus saith Jehovah, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered; for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.

Isaiah 49 26
`` `I will force those who oppress you to eat their own flesh, and they will get drunk on their own blood, as though it were sweet wine. All will know that I, Jehovah, am your saviour, your reclaimer, the mighty one of Jacob.' ''

Isaiah 49 26
And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine: and all flesh shall know that I, Jehovah, am thy Saviour, and thy Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.
