Joel 1
1The word of Jehovah, that came through Joel (`Joel' = `Jehovah is his God') son of Pethuel (`Pethuel' = `enlarged of God'):

2``Hear this, old men. Listen, all those who have settled on the land. Has such a thing ever happened in your day, or did it happen in the days of your forefathers?

3``Tell your sons about it so that they tell their sons, so that their sons may tell it to posterity:

4What was left behind by the devouring locusts, the swarming locusts ate. What remained over from the swarming locusts, the licking locusts then ate. Those remnants from the licking locusts the ravaging locusts are devouring.

5Wake up you drunkards! Weep and howl about new wine, all you drinkers of wine, over the fact that your supply to the mouth has been cut off.

6A swarm has even ascended above the land, with power and innumerable teeth like the teeth of a lion, even the fangs of the jaw of a lioness.

7They brought the vine to ruin, and the twig of the fig tree has been stripped off, the tendrils stripped away and thrown to the ground!

8Lament-- as a virgin mourning in sackcloth for the husband of her youth.

9Sacrifice and drink offering have been cut off from the house of Jehovah, and the priests serving Jehovah are in mourning.

10The land is devastated-- the earth cries out for the spoiled grain, the dried-up wine, and the failed oil.

11Fall down, you farmers! Cry out vinedressers, because of the wheat and the barley, for the country's harvest has been taken away.

12The vine has withered as the fig tree droops, and the pomegranate, even the palm and apple trees-- all trees in the land are dry! Surely all joy has come to disappointment in the sons of the earth.

13Clothe yourselves in sackcloth and lament you priests! Howl you attendants at the altar! Go and lay down all night long in sackcloth you attendants of God, as the house of God is denied its sacrifices and drink offerings.

14Proclaim a fast! Call an assembly! Gather all the elders to settle on the earth at the house of Jehovah God, to cry out to Jehovah.

15It is a sad day because the day of Jehovah is near, and the Almighty brings violence--

16not the disappearance of food, but now he has cut off gladness and rejoicing from the house of the true God!

17Seeds are dried up beneath their sod, cellars are left bare, barns are in ruins, because the wheat has dried up.

18This is why the cattle low but the bulls make trouble for the herd, because-- even the shepherds are guilty!

19To Jehovah I cry, because fire has gobbled up the pleasant places of the open field, and flame has exhausted all of the trees in the country.

20Yes, the beasts of the field pant toward You, because the flood of water in the streambeds has dried up, and a burning has consumed the sweet pastures of the desert.

Joel 1 1
The word of Jehovah that came to Joel the son of Pethuel.
Joel 1 2
Hear this, ye old men, and give ear, all ye inhabitants of the land. Hath this been in your days, or in the days of your fathers?
Joel 1 3
Tell ye your children of it, and [let] your children [tell] their children, and their children another generation.
Joel 1 4
That which the palmer-worm hath left hath the locust eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath the canker-worm eaten; and that which the canker-worm hath left hath the caterpillar eaten.
Joel 1 5
Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and wail, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the sweet wine; for it is cut off from your mouth.
Joel 1 6
For a nation is come up upon my land, strong, and without number; his teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he hath the jaw-teeth of a lioness.
Joel 1 7
He hath laid my vine waste, and barked my fig-tree: he hath made it clean bare, and cast it away; the branches thereof are made white.
Joel 1 8
Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.
Joel 1 9
The meal-offering and the drink-offering are cut off from the house of Jehovah; the priests, Jehovah`s ministers, mourn.
Joel 1 10
The field is laid waste, the land mourneth; for the grain is destroyed, the new wine is dried up, the oil languisheth.
Joel 1 11
Be confounded, O ye husbandmen, wail, O ye vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley; for the harvest of the field is perished.
Joel 1 12
The vine is withered, and the fig-tree languisheth; the pomegranate-tree, the palm-tree also, and the apple-tree, even all the trees of the field are withered: for joy is withered away from the sons of men.
Joel 1 13
Gird yourselves [with sackcloth], and lament, ye priests; wail, ye ministers of the altar; come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the meal-offering and the drink-offering are withholden from the house of your God.
Joel 1 14
Sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the old men [and] all the inhabitants of the land unto the house of Jehovah your God, and cry unto Jehovah.
Joel 1 15
Alas for the day! for the day of Jehovah is at hand, and as destruction from the Almighty shall it come.
Joel 1 16
Is not the food cut off before our eyes, [yea], joy and gladness from the house of our God?
Joel 1 17
The seeds rot under their clods; the garners are laid desolate, the barns are broken down; for the grain is withered.
Joel 1 18
How do the beasts groan! the herds of cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture; yea, the flocks of sheep are made desolate.
Joel 1 19
O Jehovah, to thee do I cry; for the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath burned all the trees of the field.
Joel 1 20
Yea, the beasts of the field pant unto thee; for the water brooks are dried up, and the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness.
