Some Thoughts On Matters Of Import

Chapter 10:

When to take offense -- thankfulness

"However, the undeserved kindness which he gives is greater. Hence it says: 'God opposes the haughty ones, but he gives undeserved kindness to the humble ones.' "
(James 4:6)

"The taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Eccl. 7:9)"   It seems to be a common human failing to be in reaction to other events, as if we cannot do a single thing except as a sort of response to fears or perceived threats.   The 'fight-or-flight' response is very strong as a protective mechanism, and can produce adrenalin in sufficient quantities to allow humans to do things seemingly beyond their own strength, such as lifting automobiles to free trapped victims.   It is not good, however, when everything around us is viewed as a threat sufficient to produce massive quantities of adrenalin.   The same book says, "Also, do not give your heart to all the words that people may speak, that you may not hear your servant calling down evil upon you.   For your own heart well knows even many times that you, even you, have called down evil upon others."   So, ironically, is it not the very thing that we don't like about someone that is the very thing of which we ourselves are guilty?   In other words, we have a problem with something.   The reason we hear evil coming out of others mouths is because we believe others are evil.   Thank Jehovah that we are all different?

Yes, we can be thankful for many things, not the least of which is a brain for which we should show due respect.   Our brain didn't have to earn our respect, did it?   We don't disrespect our brains by putting poison into them to alter their functioning, do we?   Instead of dwelling on what is wrong with everything, then, we can be thankful.   We can be thankful for the gift of life, which was freely given to us, and which we did not deserve, nor did we have to earn it.   If you are haughty, the scripture says that God himself will oppose you (James 4:6), but thankfulness and haughtiness are hard to express simultaneously.   God is not on our side, then, unless we are thankful for what he has given us.
