Some Thoughts On Matters Of Import

Chapter 4:

Goals

"I am pursuing down toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God by means of Christ Jesus."
(Philippians 3:14)

"Stop managing them so much."   Words to this effect were noted by one knowledgable source regarding genii.

While it may have been spoken by a genius, the above word rings true.   Albert Einstein, a man whom many regard as having been a genius, is today honoured by having his brain stored and studied by scientists.   The highest honour?   On the contrary, such grotesque behaviour may have something to do with goals.   Did the scientist who took Einstein's brain ask permission in advance from the deceased's relatives?   On the contrary, his defense in one radio interview was that they did not seem particularly upset when he told them he had taken it.   Were they scientific?   "It is not in the tradition of the German people to keep a loved one's brain on the mantel piece as a remembrancer," remarked one observer.   Still, goals have their place.

We all have goals.   Some may not be so obvious.   We have a goal of getting out of bed for the first time each day.   This goal, which many take for granted, is not so easy.   You must muster your strength (sufficient to support your own weight), you must get up into a sitting position, you must get your feet into position beneath your body, and you must attain to an immediate balance once you finally do stand.   Not so easy after all.   Not to mention the many other things which must be done if a person is to go out that day.

There was a preacher who spoke once about living each day as if his life were starting all over, and yet living it as if it somehow were his last.   Jesus Christ said, "Sufficient for each day is its own badness." (Matt 6:34)   1Corinthians 4:20 explains: "Be babes as to badness; yet become full-grown in powers of understanding."   One day at a time.   Still, goals have their place.

It's important to remember that Jehovah God created the universe in all its glory, not so he could have it as a possession, but so that he could cause it to become something, and that he might thereby become something Himself.   This would enable Him to, at the same time, become something toward the people that He would create.   So He had a goal.   Similarly, it has been said that it's not what we get out of life, it's what we become that matters.   So, it's important to decide what we really want to be first, and then take action.   Jehovah did.   Anyone looking at the beauty of a flower, or hearing the chirping of birds first thing in the morning cannot help but notice, "there is something unique about that."   And where would uniqueness be without purpose?   Truly, the better defined we are about our purpose, the more unique will the result be.

Do you just jump out of bed in the morning and shout "Yes!" at the top of your lungs?
