Some Thoughts On Matters Of Import

Chapter 5:

Is it possible to do too little?

"Become steadfast, unmovable, always having plenty to do in the work of the Lord."
(1Corinthians 15:58)

Why do we sometimes not meet our goals?   Sometimes we may wonder whether it is possible to do too little in the achieving of our goals.   We may wonder whether we have come up short in our attempts to accomplish our goals.

Remember that we are part of a larger purpose.   The biblical definition of a fool has been described as a person who, looking up at the grandeur of a starry night in all its glory, cannot honestly say that whoever made the universe is more intelligent than he is.   So, rather than thinking that it is possible to do too little, rather let us think that no matter how much we do, it will still be a tiny fraction of what Jehovah has done for us.

"A man may think out his way, but Jehovah himself does the directing of his steps," wrote the wise king in Proverbs. (Prov 16:9)
"Rely [on Jehovah], and he himself will act." So wrote the psalmist. (Ps 37:5)
"Many are the plans in the heart of a man, but the counsel of Jehovah is what will stand." (Prov 19:21)
"[Jehovah himself] made mankind upright, but they themselves have sought out many plans." (Eccl 7:29)

Is it possible that we are rationalizing our lack of action?

"The ridiculer you should strike, that the inexperienced one may become shrewd; and there should be a reproving of the understanding one, that he may discern knowledge." (Prov 19:25)   "Listen to counsel and accept discipline, in order that you may become wise in your future." (Prov 19:20)
"Do not reprove a ridiculer, that he may not hate you.   Give a reproof to a wise person and he will love you." (Prov 9:8)
"The blessing of Jehovah--- that is what makes rich, and he adds no pain with it." (Prov 10:22)
"The very fear of Jehovah will add days, but the years themselves of the wicked ones will be cut short." (Prov 10:27)
"A king's heart is as streams of water in the hand of Jehovah.   Everywhere that he delights to, he turns it.   Every way of a man is upright in his own eyes, but Jehovah is making an estimate of hearts.   To carry on righteousness and judgment is more preferable to Jehovah than sacrifice...   The plans of the diligent one surely make for advantage, but everyone that is hasty surely heads for want." (Prov 21:1-3, 5)
"A rebuke works deeper in one having understanding than striking a stupid one a hundred times." (Prov 17:10, 11)
